School Turnarounds: Gold Rush for Consultants or kids?

While I'm thrilled that the feds have provided a bit more
clarity and money on fixing low-performing schools than the last administration,
I've been amazed that there has not been more thoughtful discussion about
what's worked and how to successfully pull off a turnaround. A thanks goes to Andy

Newsweek's List and the Charter Factor

Check out the latest
"best" high schools list.
While I have serious concerns about the limited metrics for this list
(AP and IB participation, not success), it's a great list of schools. Interestingly 15 of the top 100
schools nationally are charters.
This is many times more what you'd expect given the small number of
charter high schools. While
I'm guessing that there are also a disproportionately high number of charters
at the bottom (come on NACSA get these authorizers to close them), it does
suggest that there is something to having small charter high schools.

Check out this remarkable article
in this Sunday's NY Times Magazine on the powerful education reform
movement that Education Reform Now, DFER, TFA, NLNS and other key partners and politicians are
leading. It does an excellent job
of describing how there is a growing national movement focused on reforming public
education so that it might live up to it's founding American ideals.

Dear Education Reformer --

On March 29, the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) took the bold step of naming only two states -- Delaware and Tennessee -- as Race to the Top (RTTT) Round 1 winners. The process was highly selective, as these two states were chosen from a group of 16 finalists from an initial pool of 41 applicants.

To assist policymakers in the Round 2 planning process, we -- Democrats for Education Reform, the Education Equality Project, and Education Reform Now -- are publishing a series of "Race Smarter" briefs, based on analysis of Round 1 applications, with the goal of informing states' efforts to compete successfully for the remaining $3.4 billion in Race to the Top funds.

We hope that these issue briefs will help state and local policymakers make the changes needed to enact education reforms that meet the very high standards set by President Obama and the aspirations and hopes we have for all of our nation's teachers and students.

Please click below to download the full introduction and a brief for each state.

Race Smarter Cover Letter.pdf

CO Race Smarter Brief.pdf

FL Race Smarter Brief.pdf

GA Race Smarter Brief.pdf

IL Race Smarter Brief.pdf

LA Race Smarter Brief.pdf

MA Race Smarter Brief.pdf

MI Race Smarter Brief.pdf

NJ Race Smarter Brief.pdf

NY Race Smarter Brief.pdf

OH Race Smarter Brief.pdf

RI Race Smarter Brief.pdf

WI Race Smarter Brief.pdf
