Charter Authorizing 2.0

June 18, 2010

There was time not too long ago when most folks following charter quality (and the various policy battles) were only focused on the schools.  Thankfully, The National Association of Charter Authorizers (NACSA) is now really hitting stride by working with authorizers and providing leadership about a charter sector that is first and foremost about school quality.   Their latest report with some great information on authorizers can be found here.

Recent news in New York, Colorado, Ohio and here in Minnesota point out the growing recognition by charter advocates and opponents that it's best for everyone (especially kids) if the authorizer does a good job.  I'm hoping that districts can begin to take the performance management practices from the best authorizers like the State University of New York and apply them to district managed schools.  I'm also hoping that the poor district charter authorizers give it up to committed experts... whoever they are in that state.
